| September 25, 2001 | Punctured Sinus |
|
Last week I survived getting the tooth removed and having my sinus punctured. I should make a t-shirt that says so... Probably the worst thing about having my sinus pierced is that I'm not allowed to sneeze or blow my nose or else I will risk losing the thin clot of blood filling the hole. You never have such an immense desire to blow your nose until you're told that you can't. And sneezing -- sometimes it's impossible to stop yourself from sneezing. In that case, I'm suppose to "sneeze with my mouth open." Let's just hope this doesn't happen in a meeting this week. My colleagues may not enjoy having me sneezing all over them. "What will happen if I lose the clot?" I asked the doctor. "You'll be drinking water and it will automatically come up into your nose." Ewww! Apparently, the other bad part about losing the clot, is that I will need to have part of the skin on my inner cheek surgically pulled over to fill the hole. So, I'm desperately trying not to sneeze. And I'm taking my Tylenol with codeine. posted by Jess Barron @ 3:44 PM |

Some of the more disturbing details from today's Reuters newsfeed on Salon today: A morgue set up in a Brooks Brothers clothing store received remains a limb at a time. and Kelley spent the day working in a crater left by the towers' collapse. As he picked through the rubble, he watched as a man's body -- a cell phone still clutched in his hand -- was carried out. posted by Jess Barron @ 1:41 PM |

6:45 a.m. PT I finally managed to fall asleep just three hours ago, and then ten minutes ago my dad called from the East Coast leaving frantic messages trying to wake us up. Apparently two planes were crashed into the World Trade Towers in New York. When I finally managed to answer the phone, I was completely confused about what day & time it was because I haven't slept more than 3 hours over the past 3 nights. I'm already sleep-deprived to the point of frayed sanity. One of the planes is apparently an American Airlines plane from Boston. My mom is flying on an American Airlines plane from Boston to San Francisco to visit me tomorrow morning. My exhausted brain was confused, so right now I'm crying uncontrollably, because at first I thought my dad was telling me that it was my mom's plane. My parents are freaking out because they can't locate my brother (who lives in Manhattan and goes to NYU's Stern business school). I'm sure he's probably sleeping somewhere or he misplaced his cellphone. My parents used to call me all worried when they heard there were fires in the Los Angeles hills, even though I lived several miles away. Do business school classes start before 10a.m.? Is Stern very close to the World Trade Center?

9:40 a.m. PT We located my brother. He was working out at the gym when the crash happened, and he apparently saw the whole thing. I hope all my friends in New York are OK. San Francisco has closed the Golden Gate and the Bay bridges. Gareth can't get to work (in Marin). I might try to get to the office, because I have so much I need to get caught up on. Still trying to figure out what to do. 12:01 a.m. PT It's almost midnight right now. I ended up working from home today and mostly just alternating between freaking out and/or trying desperately not to freak out. Selena and Esther both called from Portland to check in. It was so nice to get phone calls from them. Esther also sent a really great email. Ya'll are the best. I'm glad you're my friends. posted by Jess Barron @ 12:01 AM |
